Hello everyone! Hope you are all doing well 😊
If you are new to this space, welcome! Saturday Loves is a series here on The Lovely Road where I will share other writers' Substack newsletters that I recently read and enjoyed and give them a creative "shout-out" as well as sharing what I have been interested in on a personal level outside of Substack.
In my offline world...
What I've been doing:
Going for walks. I am taking advantage of the fact that June so far in my neck of the woods, has been in the 70's (Fahrenheit) most days which has been nice. Perfect weather for mid-morning walks. It starts to really heat up here in July with the higher degree temps, so I am getting in as many morning walks as I am able to.
What I've been reading:
The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle. This book was recommended by someone I follow on Substack and I found the synopsis intriguing, so I requested it at my local library and started reading. I am almost done with it, and I am finding it quite interesting. Tolle talks quite a bit about ego and how it gets in the way of us just living our lives. One of the examples he gave was about people that "always have to be right". They can't let a topic go and have to argue to convince you that they are correct, and you are wrong because they are caught up in their ego with the need to always be right. There is no compromise. Their ego will not let them be wrong, even for a second. When we remove ourselves from our ego and see it as something separate from us, we are then on our way to a path of enlightenment. Even if the "woo woo" stuff isn't in your wheelhouse, it is a good reminder when having discussions with others to notice if you are actually trying to get your point across to be understood, or are you being mulish and stubborn in your dialogue because you need to be right. So, so interesting, right?
What I have been listening to/watching:
This keynote address from Jack Conte who is the CEO of Patreon. It is from his appearance at SXSW and it is called Death of the Follower and the Future of Creativity on the Web. He talks about how the rise of platform-based algorithms has affected creators and their following and the shift that this has had for creators' ability to not only create but support themselves. Conte also talks about how we can overcome this and forge our own way. I found what he had to say absolutely fascinating, and this is definitely worth the listen/watch. Also, FYI, he does curse so if you have little ones about or you want to watch this in a public space, just keep that in mind 🎧

Thanks for sharing Peco's and my interview with Erin :) It was truly a pleasure to read her book (and get to ask her questions) and find not only a firm stance, but lots of very practical recommendations for families who are facing constant pressure to cave to getting kids phones and ever more tech.
