I truly think of this too! I don’t remember my grandmothers feeling like so rushed all of the time, or maybe that’s because of the season of life they were in..but I wonder how my grandmother of 7 kids truly did it in that season…
I do think, for myself at least, that to be intentional I have to focus on what is front of me, stay in prayer to guide and surrender, and just kind of stay in my lane.
I think some people are busy bc they are trying to keep up (totally have been guilty of this, w kids in activities and my own goals) and seriously what is the point.. we’ve slowed down on commitments, I’ve focused on things more in front and letting go of social media I think helps bc I think people look and compare and try to do more and more to keep up with what idk lol whatever they think they “need”
As I talked about in my letter today, life alone feels like a lot, and we have to know when to pull back and just BE. It truly isn’t easy
But, for me, embracing the more simple in life has been my goal, and I *think* it helps— it’s a work in progress!
Have you read The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry by John Mark Comer? So, so good! A must-read if you haven’t 🤓 Very inspired by what he wrote!
Yes, prayer and surrender! 🙏🏼 I think modern life has us spinning and being intentional means we have to take a step back from it at times. Like you were saying with commitments and social media, etc… I feel like you and I are on the same page with this being moms to young kids and feeling the pull to do all the things.
A lot of this busyness depends on what stage of life one is in. When young and vital, we chase careers, mates, establishing a family and home, whatever that is. Then come the children, if that's what one wants/plans/happens to get. That's a 20-30 year commitment right there and a tangent that can take us anywhere we didn't expect. Talk about busyness! Then come the coasting years when we realize there were some things that passed us by, but maybe ... just maybe we can participate in them in some way. It depends on health and physical/mental agility. Finally (and this is the surprising and sometimes fun part), we can do those "quiet" things that we always wanted to do. Write that book. Travel to that island or lake. Wander or enjoy the home and yard we were too busy working to buy it. Meet the neighbors. Join a group of fellow hobbyists. Make a difference volunteering in our community. What makes us so busy at some times is when we try to do everything at the same time. Another quote to add to those in your article: "To everything there is a time and a place under Heaven." Spread things out instead of spreading yourself thin.
“What makes us so busy at some times is when we try to do everything at the same time”. This 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 So true. One thing at a time and to take things as they come. And I also love what you said here: “Spread things out instead of spreading yourself thin”. I’m going to remember that one, so good!!
Thank you for this Mackenzie... Definitely given me so much to think about. 💕 My members post this month is centred around the word intention, so lots of what you are exploring here has been at the forefront of my mind this month. I find I choose a little and often approach that slows me down, gentle focus, whilst getting super selective about where/what I spend my time on. I also allow myself to rest and enjoy the quiet moments fully ... I used to hurry them along but now I try and linger and soak in the rest and stillness whenever I can. Thank you for this. 🙏🙏
Such an interesting piece, thank you. I've found myself less busy of late as both my boys have headed off to Uni, and after a lifetime of being busy I have had the luxury of more time. That's brought it's own challenges as my need for busyness fought with my desire for down time.
No easy answers, but interest and thought-provoking reflections 🌿 Thank you 🙏✨
We’re in this together! 💫🌿
Loved this!!!

Ecclesiastes has so many nuggets of truth 🩵
Yes, a good warning to stop and think — what am so busy about? Is it needed?
Yes, absolutely!

So glad you enjoyed it Emily! 🌿
I love the word linger that you used, we definitely need to do that more 💛

I absolutely understand about desiring down time but your brain wants to keep busy. Definitely a challenge and one I struggle with as well.
